Gym Class Heroes - Cookie Jar [Single]

Gym Class Heroes initally broke onto the same scene and label as a bunch of poppy emo bands. Label mates include Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is and Panic at the Disco for example. The thing about Gym Class Heroes that made them different than any other artist out there was they were a Hip Hop "band". They had a live band and they rapped on top of it. Where everyone was just sanpling and programming beats these boys were in a room being very Rock and Roll. This has all been lost on this single.

Cookie Jar (their new single) sees them now moving into the realms of becoming just another R&B Rap act in what is already an VERY oversaturated market. Replacing their initial originality in an attempt to break deeper into the very popular Hip Hop / R&B market in America. I would even hazard to say that for many this crossover might be too much. Most music listeners aren't as ecelectic taste wise as myself and making such a drastic change can lose you fans quickly.

Cookie Jar is a song about not being able to settle down with one girl as he can't keep his hands out of the Cookie Jar (the pussy pot for want of a better term). He refers to the differing types and races of girls as if they were an assortment selection of cookies referring to black girls as "Oreos" and Brazillian girls as "Hazelnut". The main hook of the song is sampled from a T-Pain song making the hook VERY catchy.

The whole band thing appears to have been abandoned now though with sampling, programmed beats and syths completely replacing the real drums and guitars that became a staple diet for original Gym Class Hero fans. It's quite a nice song to listen to however I don't think I will ever reach on the shelf to pull this single out as a MUST listen to type of thing. In fact, I probably won't be listening to this song ever again. Not because it's not good, it just doesn't really float my boat. The single is good though if you like that sort of thing.
